Low Cost Technologies for Home Use Water Purifiers

Summary

This request seeks proposals for water purification technologies capable of delivering safe, high-quality drinking water while maintaining low cost. The ideal solution should eliminate microbes, trace heavy metals, and meet specific mineral content requirements. The technology should offer performance comparable to or surpassing reverse osmosis (RO), with a focus on membrane-type technologies featuring low pressure, high water flow, and extended module lifetime.

Stage of Development

TRL 9 - Already on the market

Description

The purified water must meet stringent quality standards, including:

► Clear and transparent appearance with no observable particles, color, or odors.

► Free of toxins, heavy metal contaminants, and by-products from detoxification chemicals.

► Microbial and pathogen-free.

► Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) between 50-300 mg/L.

► Hardness level between 25-200 mg/L.

Cost Considerations:

► Low-cost solutions are paramount to ensure accessibility and affordability for end-users.

Purification Technology Specifications:

► Microbial and Heavy Metal Removal - Proposals should detail the efficacy of the technology in eliminating microbes and trace amounts of heavy metals.

► Mineral Retention - The technology should retain essential minerals within the desired range.

► Performance Comparison to RO - Technologies should match or exceed the performance of traditional reverse osmosis methods.

► Exclusion of CDI and EDI - Solutions based on Capacitive Deionization (CDI) and Electrodeionization (EDI) technologies are excluded from consideration.

► Low-Pressure Membrane - Proposals should feature membranes requiring low operating pressures. Technologies must offer simultaneous high water flow rates to ensure efficient purification.

► COD Removal - Emphasis should be placed on high performance in Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal.

► Self-Cleaning or Extended Lifetime Modules - Membrane modules should either possess self-cleaning capabilities or offer extended lifetimes exceeding 5 years.

Alternative Purification Technologies - Solutions beyond membrane-based technologies must demonstrate superior performance compared to RO or provide innovative approaches for water purification.
