Cardanol-based eco-friendly chemicals and High-purity cardanol

Summary

A Korean Manufacturing company in the chemical industry produces high-purity cardanol from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and synthesizes cardanol-based eco-friendly chemicals. This product can be used in various ways such as paint industry, mechanical/electronic coating field, and the field of intermediate application of chemical materials. In addition, this product is a 100% biomass eco-friendly product extracted from cashew nut shell liquid. The company is looking for overseas buyers or technical cooperation partners to export this product.

Advantages and Innovations

This company produces high-purity cardanol from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) in Korea and synthesizes cardanol-based eco-friendly chemicals.

The company's main product lines include high-purity cardanol and cardanol-based epoxy, phenalkamine, polyol, and UV-curable resin materials. Currently, high-purity cardanol, epoxy, and phenalkamine products have been developed and are being sold to paint companies, and polyol and UV-curing resin materials are being produced as prototypes.

Because cardanol is physically extracted only from CNSL (cashew nut shell liquid), there are no VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and it is a 100% biomass eco-friendly product. Received a test report from SGS, an authorized analysis agency, Total-VOCs content does not occur, and also obtained Biomass 100% content certification from USDA (US Department of Agriculture).

ESG management can be practiced by mixing and using cardanol-based materials with 100% biomass content, and ultimately, carbon reduction can be reduced.

Stage of Development

TRL 9 - Ready-to-Market

Description

1. Development of high-purity cardanol technology

- Cardanol is a compound that can replace phenol in cashew nut shell liquid and can be extracted through distillation. Cardanol contains fatty acids, cardol, and 2-methyl cardol, and high-purity cardanol required to separate them and extract 99%.

- High-purity cardanol performance (product property evaluation): The company has succeeded in commercializing 98.5% of cardanol by extracting it and minimizing impurities that do not cause odor and lacquer reaction.

2. Development of eco-friendly chemicals based on cardanol

- High-purity cardanol manufacturing technology produces eco-friendly products (epoxy, phenalkamine, polyol, UV curing resin) containing biomass materials through various chemical reactions based on cardanol.

- The company is conducting research on the minimization of technologies and processes for synthesizing various compounds based on cardanol. has exist.

2-1. epoxy

- It is an epoxy compound product that can be used as an epoxy diluent for paint, an epoxy resin raw material for photoresist, and an intermediate raw material for chemical reactions, and can replace bisphenol A, an existing petroleum product.

- Unlike phenol, various impurities may be generated in the synthesis reaction since it is a biomass material. Thus it is necessary to have a technology that can synthesize complying with the desired chemical structure and conditions to control the molecular weight.

- Epoxy products: The company develops and sells epoxy diluents (epoxy monomers) as CGE-400 products, and has the advantage of lower viscosity compared to existing biomass epoxy diluents.

2-2. Phenalcamine

- As a substitute for petroleum amines used as hardeners (additives to harden) in the existing paint field, cardanol-based phenalkamine is mainly used as a hardener in the paint field. Because it is very fast, it is used in heavy-duty (for ships) fields.

- The company has a synthetic technology that can control the curing speed of phenalkamine in the field of heavy-duty corrosion, and has the advantage of high adhesion in the field of paint undercoating.

2-3. polyol

- Currently, many companies are interested in developing vegetable oil (biomass)-based biopolyols. Polyol can be used in a variety of ways, such as plastic materials for general life, automobile materials, additives, and paints.

- This company is developing the original technology for cardanol-based polyols, and preparing to commercialize cardanol-based polyols.  Currently, polyol can be used as a material for refrigerators and insulation, and product evaluation is in progress.

- Polyol products include amine polyols and novolac polyols depending on the chemical structure.

2-4. UV curing resin

- UV-curing resin is a high value-added material spotlighted as a photosensitive resin, and can be used in electrical and electronic coating films, polymer adhesives, 3D printers, and polyurethane paints.
