Summary

A Korean SME, based in Seoul, has developed a new type of wind power generating system using horizontal blades. By applying Bernoulli’s theorem to the wind power generation, this system can generate 4 times as much power as VAWTs (existing wind turbines), only by using 1/80 of its space with less costs. Advantages and Innovations

Compared to solar energy and existing wind farm system, the technology has benefits in terms of electricity productivity, amount of land used, and economic feasibility.

Description

A Korean SME is an energy R&D company based in Seoul. To respond to the climate crisis, the company has created a new energy technology that overcomes the limitations of existing renewable energy technologies. They have identified several issues in the existing wind power system that are:

 

  1. Ineffective use of wind
  2. Noise, vibration, opposition to residents
  3. Frequent failures
  4. Bird Strikes
  5. Low economic feasibility.


The company has been able to address each of these issues with their technology. They have developed a very new type of system which is ‘Augmented Wind based Decentralized Energy Resource’, a power generation system to produce & supply power by use of renewables. 


This technology can be differentiated itself from the existing wind power system – it means the product is suitable for installation at downtown, building top or roof, or remote locations. The upper and lower parts of the tower can be used for various functions like EV(electric vehicles) charging stations, smart farms, power transmission towers – with high economic efficiency.

 

The company employs the stacked tower. Generation turbine is installed at the center on each floor of the stacked tower. As such, it is possible to increase generation efficiency by 4 times. It has become possible by increasing wind speed (Bernoulli’s theorem) and by changing the turbulent flow of the wind to laminar flow.

 

The innovations of this technology are as follows:

 

1. Stacked tower

: The electricity is generated by towers that are built by floor. They can be installed in each capacity depending on the purpose. It is possible to repair only the failed floor, operating the others. Solar panels can be put on top and sides. It has low chance of bird striking due to visible towers. Lower floors can be used for various purposes. 

 


 

2. Better utilization of winds

: The structure of the system is based on Bernoulli principle; 

  1. Wind becomes faster entering the tower.
  2. It can generate with slower winds
  3. Larger power created at the same-speed wind
  4. Turbulent flows become laminar flows on entering 
     

 

3. Robust structure

: Turbines are fastened up and down, which makes low vibration and noise. It is also able to generate strong winds, having low failure rate.
